The silver archive carries a second column, “1 Kg Silver”. From January 2006 to March 2017 it ran at about 93.5% of a thousand times the gram figure (₹13,620 beside ₹14.55 a gram on 2 January 2006). Since March 2017 it has read 0.00 on almost every day, and the few figures it has held since follow no single rule. So the gram rate is the only silver figure worth quoting.

Making Charges and GST on Silver in Nagercoil
What Making Charges Add to 50 Grams of Silver
For a piece sold by weight, the silver line is its net silver weight times the shop's rate for that fineness. The making charge and any stones are added to it.
For example, 50 grams of silver at the latest rate of ₹250 a gram is ₹12,500. An illustrative making charge of ₹20 a gram, not a Nagercoil shop's charge, adds ₹1,000, so the price before tax is ₹13,500; GST at 3% is ₹405, and the bill comes to ₹13,905. Every ₹1 a gram on the rate is ₹50 on those 50 grams before tax.
GST on Silver Jewellery
GST is 3% of the whole price, making charge included, whether or not the bill shows the making charge separately. The government's GST FAQ gives that answer for silver jewellery as for gold (how the 3% GST is worked out). Silver bars and other unwrought silver, silversmiths' wares and coins are in the same 3% schedule. The bill for a hallmarked piece has to give the net weight of the precious metal and its fineness.

How to Check the Silver Hallmark and HUID
Hallmarking silver is voluntary. The compulsory hallmarking order covers gold only, so a silver piece can be sold with no hallmark at all. A silver hallmark applied since 1 September 2025 has three marks: the BIS standard mark with the word SILVER, the purity grade, and a HUID of six letters and numbers. The grades are 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999, the parts of silver in every 1,000.
