How Many Pavan Is 1 Kg of Gold?

125 pavan. A kilogram is 1,000 grams, and 1,000 ÷ 8 is 125. That holds for gold of any purity, because a pavan measures weight.

How Many Grams Is 1 Pavan or Sovereign, and Why Eight?

A pavan is 8 grams, and its name comes from English. The University of Madras Tamil Lexicon derives பவுன் (pavan, also spelt pavun or poun) from “pound” and defines it as the pound sterling or sovereign. It derives சவரன் (savaran) from “sovereign”, the same coin.

1 pavan = 8 grams: eight 1-gram blocks make one pavan. Pavan × 8 = grams; grams ÷ 8 = pavan.

The Royal Mint lists the sovereign at 7.98 g, in gold 916.7 fine, which is 22 carat. The pavan is a round 8 grams, which is how the Tamil Nadu government describes the coin its marriage assistance schemes give: “1 Sovereign (8 gm) 22 carat gold coin”, for making the thirumangalyam. A sovereign coin is therefore 0.02 g short of the pavan named after it.

A pavan measures weight, not purity. A pavan of 22K (916) jewellery holds 7.328 g of pure gold and a pavan of 18K (750) holds 6 g, because the gold in a piece is its weight times its fineness ÷ 1,000 (why equal weights hold unequal gold). So ask which purity a price per pavan is for.

Convert the Net Gold Weight

A piece with stones, enamel or a lac core weighs more on the scale than the gold in it, and only the net gold weight is priced at the gold rate (gross, stone and net weight). When a chain or a necklace is described as so many pavan, ask whether that is its gross weight or its gold.

A stone-set gold pendant shown whole, as its three stones, and as the gold setting alone: gross weight minus stone weight equals net gold weight.

The bill for a hallmarked piece has to give the net weight of the precious metal, and a registered jeweller has to keep a balance accurate to 0.01 g for customers to check it. That net figure, in grams, is the one to convert.

How to Convert a Pavan Rate to a Gram Rate

Divide a rate per pavan by 8 for the rate per gram, and multiply a gram rate by 8 for the pavan rate, so every ₹100 on the gram rate is ₹800 on a pavan. A price for 10 grams is 1.25 pavan's worth, so 0.8 of it is the price of a pavan.

The metal is only part of a jewellery bill. The gold price calculator takes the net gold weight in grams and adds the making charge, any wastage, stones and GST to the gold value.
