Harris Nadar's is the rate on its own website, which gives one address. The others publish one rate for a wider area: Jos Alukkas for every place its rate page names, Joyalukkas for its Tamil Nadu showrooms, Kalyan and Malabar for the whole of India, Lalitha for Tamil Nadu and Thangamayil for all its stores. These are rates for the metal alone, before the making charge, any stones and GST. Before you agree to an estimate, ask which rate your bill is worked at and whether the showroom's board rate that day differs from the one published online.

At the Nagercoil gold rate of 25 September, ₹14,010 a gram, each percentage point of making charge on a one-pavan piece is ₹1,121 before GST. On a one-pavan chain, the lowest charge in the table, 8%, comes to ₹8,966 and the highest, 24%, to ₹26,899.

These are charges for making a piece, each as a share of the gold in it. The table does not say whose bill comes out lower, because two pieces differ in weight, in the stones they carry and sometimes in the rate the bill is worked at. To set another shop's quote against these figures, add its making charge and any wastage together as one share of the gold value, at the same rate per gram. A shop that gives you one figure for the whole piece has to split it into lines before any of this can be done.

Harris Nadar's online pieces are all 18K, so they are not in the table: its Value Added on them runs from 7% to 17%, and one is listed with almost none. Lalitha's website lists weights without prices; its pre-booking brochure mentions gold jewellery with V.A. of 5% or less and pieces that carry 16% or 20%. Kalyan publishes no making-charge percentage for its showroom.
